New Year

The last two years have been packed with life. Packed with the milestones sprinkled in country love songs: marriage, a pregnancy, a baby. There also was some loss—the death of my precious and dearly loved Papa Gene. The health scare of my life on my baby’s birthday. Oh, and we got a dog that we’re absolutely obsessed with. And went to Maui and enjoyed hammocks and hula and snorkeling.

There has been far more sweet than bitter. God is so gracious. We so don’t deserve it. When I ponder his great faithfulness to me, I am quiet. To quote a favorite hymn, “I scarce can take it in.”

2014, what will you look like? I know what I will look like.

Slightly less put together leaving the house for work in the morning because when I would have been putting on makeup, I’m now playing pat-a-cake. Slightly less roomy in my pre-baby jeans (working on it). Now and then, I will wear a look of awe as light bulbs of learning turn on—one by one—in my little guy’s brain. More laugh lines. Fewer tan lines (quality daycare trumps tropical vacations). And chances are good that I will be wearing my comfy black pants and Northwestern hoodie a lot. That is for sure.

2012, you delighted me. 2013, you changed me forever. 2014, it’s your turn.
